The San Francisco 49ers returned to the practice field on Monday, donning full pads for the first time. Head coach Kyle Shanahan shared updates on player injuries, noting that several individuals were absent from practice.
There is currently no timeline for edge rusher Drake Jackson’s return, and he is expected to miss the entirety of training camp. Shanahan commented on Jackson’s situation, saying, “Those are major surgeries. They’re challenging to recover from, and you never know how the body will respond. It’s always possible that recovery might take a long time, and it has.”
If Jackson remains on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, he won’t count against the 53-man roster limit, which means the 49ers have the flexibility not to rush his return. However, the longer Jackson is sidelined, the more he risks falling down the depth chart. His only chance to improve is by getting on the field and participating in practice.
Spencer Burford still needs to consult with one more doctor after breaking his hand during Saturday’s practice. His hand was heavily casted during Monday’s session. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that an update on Burford’s condition will be provided during his next media appearance.
Rookie wide receiver Jacob Cowing is expected to miss approximately ten days due to a hamstring injury. Wide receiver Tay Martin is also sidelined with a hamstring issue, and his recovery timeline is similar to Cowing’s. Additionally, rookie running back Isaac Guerendo is dealing with a more severe hamstring injury and is anticipated to be out for several weeks, according to Shanahan.
Here are the players who missed practice on Monday:
– Brandon Aiyuk
– Christian McCaffrey
– Kyle Juszczyk
– Isaac Guerendo
– Jon Feliciano
– Jake Brendel
– Spencer Burford
– Jacob Cowing
– Tay Martin
– Nick Bosa
Ricky Pearsall and George Kittle were dressed in pads but did not participate in team drills. Shanahan mentioned that they planned to test Pearsall today to gauge his response and expected him to likely practice tomorrow.
