Griffin faced a federal investigation after she posed for a 2017 photo holding a mask resembling Trump’s severed head.

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong stirred controversy with his actions at a recent concert in Washington, D.C. During the band’s first U.S. show of their Saviors Tour at Nationals Park on Monday night, Armstrong, while performing “Jesus of Suburbia,” held up a Donald Trump mask with “IDIOT” written across its forehead. Footage from the event shows Armstrong, who had been bending over with his arm extended, standing up with the mask in his right hand, raising it above his head as he continued performing. It’s uncertain whether Armstrong brought the mask himself or if it was handed to him by a concertgoer.

Some online reactions criticized Armstrong for displaying the Trump mask shortly after the former president survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally. In contrast, Kathy Griffin, who had previously faced public backlash and a federal investigation (as well as losing prominent endorsements and comedy gigs) for a 2017 photo featuring a mask resembling Trump’s severed head, responded to Armstrong’s action on social media.

On Thursday morning, Kathy Griffin, 63, shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of Billie Joe Armstrong holding the Trump mask, captioning it, “I see you @GreenDay & @billiejoe.” Griffin’s post contrasted with the critical responses from conservative voices on social media. Nick Sortor, for example, wrote, “Green Day had a concert here in DC last night. They decided it’d be a good idea to hold up a severed Trump head. Just TWO WEEKS after he was shot in the head. These people are SICK.”
